Frequently asked questions
What does pest control do?
Pest control identifies the pest, finds how it gets in, and removes it with a mix of sealing, sanitation, traps, baits and, when needed, pesticides. The Structural Pest Control Board's definition also covers inspections, written reports, bids and structural repairs for wood-destroying pests. The goal is long-term prevention, not just killing what you see today.
How much does pest control cost?
Nationally, a one-time general visit runs $158 to $288 in Fixr's 2025 guide and $50 to $500, averaging $171, in This Old House's 2026 guide. Rodent work, termite treatment and bed bugs cost more. There's no published Sacramento price list, so treat these as national benchmarks and compare written local quotes.
What do Branch 1, Branch 2 and Branch 3 mean?
They're the three branches of California pest control licensing. Branch 1 is fumigation with poisonous or lethal gases. Branch 2 is household pests like ants, roaches and rodents, without fumigation. Branch 3 is wood-destroying pests such as termites, using insecticides or structural repairs. Make sure the company is licensed in the branch that fits your job.
Can I do my own pest control in California?
Yes, on property you own, lease or rent. The Structural Pest Control Act exempts people doing pest control on their own property. Doing pest control for others, or advertising it, requires a Structural Pest Control Board license. Read and follow every pesticide label exactly, and keep products away from kids and pets.
Does ultrasonic pest control work?
No, not reliably. UC IPM says rats get used to repeated sounds, which makes high-frequency and ultrasonic devices ineffective, and says the same for house mice. The Federal Trade Commission warned more than 60 makers and sellers of these devices in 2001 that their claims need scientific proof. Sealing gaps and snap traps work better.
Are roof rats dangerous?
Yes. UC IPM says rats contaminate food and can spread diseases such as typhus, leptospirosis, salmonella and rat bite fever. Roof rats in attics chew wiring, which can start fires, and have even gnawed gas lines. Don't handle rats or droppings with bare hands; use disposable gloves and seal waste in a bag.
When should I call an exterminator for mice?
Call when you find droppings in more than one room, hear mice in walls or ceilings, or keep catching them after a week or two. That usually means several entry points. UC IPM notes mice fit through 1/4-inch openings, so finding and sealing every gap is the part a professional helps with most.
Is it worth getting an exterminator for mice?
Often, if mice are inside the living space. Fixr's 2025 national guide puts typical mouse service at $450 to $600, including traps, sealing and follow-up. A single mouse in a garage may be a DIY job with snap traps. Mice can spread diseases like salmonella and leptospirosis, according to UC IPM, so don't let a problem grow.
How do I know if I have termites?
Look for pencil-width mud tubes on the foundation, small piles of pellets or sawdust-like material near wood, blistered or hollow-sounding wood, and winged insects swarming indoors in spring or fall. The Structural Pest Control Board notes there may be no visible signs at all, so a professional inspection is the reliable way to know.
Are black widow spiders dangerous?
They can be. UC IPM says the adult female black widow is the most common spider in California that can seriously injure people. She is shiny black with a red hourglass underneath and hides in woodpiles, garages and clutter. Anyone bitten should stay calm and get medical advice promptly. Brown recluse and hobo spiders don't live in California.
How do I get rid of German cockroaches?
Use baits and gels, not foggers. UC IPM says foggers and bug bombs can scatter cockroaches without killing them, while baits placed near hiding spots work if food and water are removed. Seal cracks, fix leaks, store food tightly and clear clutter. It may take 7 days or longer to see fewer roaches; serious infestations need a professional.
Why do I see big black cockroaches near drains?
Those are usually oriental cockroaches. UC IPM says they live in cool, damp places like drains, water meter boxes and garages, and often build up in masonry meter boxes. They can't climb smooth surfaces, so they get trapped in sinks and tubs. Baits placed in meter boxes, drains or under slabs help control them outdoors.
Are earwigs harmful?
No. UC IPM says earwigs aren't harmful to people and aren't a health hazard, though they can damage seedlings and soft fruit. They come indoors when it's too hot, dry or cold outside. Reduce hiding spots like mulch, boards and dense ground cover, and trap them with rolled newspaper. Insecticides should rarely be needed.
Can a bed bug infestation go away on its own?
No. UC IPM says adult bed bugs can survive many months without feeding, so they outlast most attempts to starve them. Confirmed infestations are best handled by professionals using heat, targeted insecticides or both, with follow-up inspections. Foggers don't work on bed bugs and can harm your health.
Who removes yellowjacket nests in Sacramento?
Start with the Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito & Vector Control District at 1-800-429-1022. It may spray, destroy or relocate nests in the ground, trees or walls of homes. It won't treat nests that have gone into a building's structure or upper floors of multi-story buildings; those need a private pest control company.
How do I report mosquitoes or a green pool?
Contact your mosquito and vector control district. In Sacramento and Yolo counties, the Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito & Vector Control District takes neglected pool reports online or at 1-800-429-1022 and offers free mosquito home inspections. Report dead birds to 1-877-968-2473, since they help track West Nile virus.
How dangerous is West Nile virus?
Most people never get sick. The Sacramento-Yolo district says about 80% of infected people have no symptoms and about 20% get flu-like West Nile fever. About 1% develop severe illness affecting the nervous system, and about 1 in 10 of those die. People over 60 face higher risk. Use repellent and dump standing water.
Do landlords have to pay for pest control in California?
Usually. Civil Code §1941.1 says a rental isn't habitable unless areas the landlord controls are kept free of rodents and vermin, and the Attorney General lists pest control for rats, roaches and bed bugs as a landlord duty. The exception is when the tenant's failure to keep the unit clean substantially caused the problem.
What should I do before a pest control company sprays?
Read the written notice. California law requires a registered company to tell the owner and tenant, before applying, which pest it's treating, which pesticides and active ingredients it will use, plus a state caution statement. Ask how long to keep kids and pets away, and store food, toys and pet dishes as directed.
What should I do if I feel sick after pest control?
Call your doctor or Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222, which is free and open 24 hours. Tell them which pesticide was used. Report suspected pesticide illness to your county agricultural commissioner by calling 1-877-378-5463. If someone has serious trouble breathing, move away from the area and call 911.
How do I file a complaint against a pest control company?
Contact the Structural Pest Control Board. It handles complaints about missed infestations, poor workmanship, unlicensed activity, false advertising and fraud. Most complaints must be filed within two years, or four years for fraud or gross negligence. The board can't resolve payment disputes or landlord-tenant issues.
Do I need pest control after termite fumigation?
Possibly. The SPCB says fumigation leaves no lasting protection, so other pests can return, and household pests like spiders or cockroaches can survive it. You may even see more ants for a while. Subterranean termites also need their own separate soil treatment. Pellets left in old galleries after fumigation don't necessarily mean it failed.
Are ticks a problem around Sacramento?
In grassy, brushy and wooded areas, yes. UC IPM says the western blacklegged tick, which can carry Lyme disease, is common in the Sierra Nevada foothills. The Sacramento-Yolo district says ticks don't jump or fall from trees; they wait on vegetation. Stay on trail centers, check yourself after hikes and remove ticks with tweezers by pulling straight out.
